Saying good bye?

we did not know
that you would come knocking
we didn't expect you so soon

you know we had been thinking
we had been dreaming
silently , in our hearts
that you would come
that it was time that you came

but no, we didn't expect you so soon

and you arrived
a surprise
we were scared
unprepared

but you saw the happiness
you saw the glow
the blessings
the little worries
of your ma and pa
of grand moms and grand dads
of uncles and aunts
of the great grand dad and great grand moms
and everyone who knew you had come

but love, the promise was to stay forever
we were preparing the welcome
and you said goodbye

the noises of preparation
of you arrival
are now silent
no words fill up the void
we try to forget that you were there
but it isn't easy love

carelessly some words slip out
and then there are no words
the silent questions
of things we didn't do right

there is nothing now
but an emptiness
empty womb where you were
empty hearts, empty minds

we need to grieve now
and we do not know how

My mandatory year sign off...

This is something i don't usually give a miss since 1988. Yes, since i was 8 years old i have always written about the year that was on the eve to remind me of the things that i have learnt.

And this year, i have been too busy to write. Too busy to talk to family and friends. Too busy to get in touch with myself. Just making sure, that i find the time to do what i love. Write this post. Just for myself.

One thing that i feel tonight is that this year has been a long year. Usually , i never realise where time flies. But this year when i count the number of things done, places visited, milestones reached, looks like it's been a long journey. Looking back, nothing stands out that i feel proud of. But nothing saddens me immensely as well. It's like a mediocre effort with flashes of brilliance too far in between.

Like every year, i have grown calmer by my standards, but remain volatile by everyone else's. This year, i have become a bit opinionated. Last year, i would have looked at it as something negative. This year, i am proud that i have certain opinions i do not want to change. This year, i have met many people whose opinions and loyalties have changed like the global weather regime and consistency as elusive as the winters in mumbai. Thank God, at least i had my own opinions and standards that kept me floating in the weathers that have been rough. In the year , i have realised, maybe reinforced , yet again that survival of the fittest does not only relate to the poor pea plants in Darwin's experiments. It's the truth in every life, every day. From the sapling on the fourteenth floor to a colleague in the office, everyone's running the race.

This year i have also fallen in love with mumbai. After our initial squabbles, that i now know were the lovers' tiffs,  i am completely charmed by mumbai. Like every relationship, we have our rough patches, the difficult times, but we weather it along. Sometimes mumbai soothes me, sometimes i make my compromises. I have created my small dream home with the man i love in this oh-so-beautiful, harsh and loving city and as the year ends, one thing i am sure of , i would really be heartbroken if i had to move out.

One thing i also know is that i will never stop evolving or growing. I have also realised, if i never cared for what people thought about me earlier, this year i have just set my own standards and will do anything to stand by them.  Pretensions will always be pretensions. You can only be you. If only people became good at being themselves, the world would be such a great place. I would, at least, know who is who. But then, to everyone their own.

I have been awake many nights missing my home, that seems so far away. So away. My papa, mummy and brothers. But this year end, i have a feeling a wheel has turned and the new road will bring some good things for everyone back home. My year will also start with my taking the first steps to my new homeland in Hazaribagh. I have a warm feeling when i think of the trip. After being postponed for two years, i am now sure the time has come for the grihalaxmi to step into the house. Pun intended for laxmi ji. I hope she does the honours on all of us. We've lived on the fringes long enough. Now, we will take the centre stage.  On a different note, this year i have also realised that nothing is impossible. If you have a dream and you are persistent and committed, nothing can stop you.  And money matters, but not too much.

My personal life is in a good space. I feel loved and cherished by my friends and family, the few people i own completely as mine and feel happy to have them in my life, who have the faith, who make me what i am, who stand by me even in my idiosyncrasies.

From India starting on such a high note last year to the lowest ebb it has reached today, in terms of the lokpal, the economic policies and slowdown, the feeling of instability everywhere, from becoming the world number one in the non official national game to sinking low enough even by our own standards, nothing is static, nothing is stationary. Life goes on. Life moves on. You survive only if you move. You stop and you are dead.

From living with the cause i loved to thinking about it from a different perspective this year, i have seen an India that i had only heard of. The India who talks about the poor and poverty but has never seen them. I have now seen the policies being made in isolation. I have seen people who go on vacations when fifty percent of India is either reeling under its harsh winters, its difficult summers or its rains or the lack of it. I have seen that the great Indian Middle class in breaking the barriers of its own creation and aspiring to reach new heights and getting there. But the great Indian Middle class is still getting there, not fully there and some of them will not ever get there, living midst broken dreams, disillusioned future and nondescript past.  The poor anyways live only in their own memories. For the rest of India, who are too busy like me, the poor, the 50 % are a statistic.

This year my desire to hear Jagjit Singh live now will remain so forever. I have already written the obituaries of a great painter, of a maverick actor producer, of so many others. But that's life. In death they have at least shown me that all of them lived their life on their own terms and lived it.

Strangely, i feel empty of any strong emotions for the year that's slowly going by. And i am trying to feel, but i am numb. And comfortably numb.

Next year, almost here, is another tomorrow. Have a great year everyone. Only one wish, live a full life , every day and be yourself. At least i will. Everyone else, keep the faith .

Mini Mouse

Mini Mouse,

You are probably in the airport now
Bidding goodbye to your life in mumbai

Just wanted to tell you
you are already being terribly missed
by a crazy woman who's crazy about you
(and also probably by a few more
and the sev puri guy)

In another world she would have hated you
The indian american india hater
but that would have been in the other world
In this world you are more indian than she is
Proper, traditional in many more ways
made her realise
you don't actually hate india
but certain "indianisms"

what she will remember is to look at india
with the objectivity that you had
because you put india at par with the world
and showed her that we couldn't
do a "chalta hai" just because.
To sit up and take notice
and take a stand
not to take everything lying down
Just because.

Crazy Mouse, the conversations will be missed
The discussions on development, poverty and strategies
will now be dead
at least for sometime.

Will also miss the crazy sanyal eyes
the girly giggles at anything and everything
the ranting sessions
who else will be the alter ego
for the daily dilemmas
no one to hug to death

What obviously will be good
is that no more cheesy pizzas
no more craving for sweets
Though "mishti doi" will be sourly missed.

But also, no more chai session,
no morning poha
no one to shared the afternoon snack craving
no evening walking back together
no promises to exercise and diet
to break them

So mouse, take care of yourself
i can already see you rolling your eyes
at the public embarrassment
But what the hell
that's something i give you
a bit of my craziness
a public hug

Take care of yourself in the new city
And keep the faith.

Also wanted to tell you
i want that frock
and i will keep your cupboard

31

If i had to find a theme for my year gone by, i'd call it the "year of trials and tribulations" .

I can't say it was good or bad, but one thing that stands out is the fights i have had.The fights with the world, with the family, with friends and with myself.

The fights of ideology, of long drawn debates, of the rights and wrongs.

The turbulence of shifting my home ground and creating a new home and hearth. The year of living away from my parents and developing small fears that haven't let me sleep nights. Of waking up thinking about my parents , my brothers and my beautiful small sister and not knowing what to do. Of staring at blank walls and seeing my life on it running on flashback.

The checks and balances of building a new relationship. The grinding of two opposites, the friction and attraction.

The cutting of my umbilical chord with my first place of work, my people , my karmbhoomi. And the wild fern trying to find a base in the manicured lawns of mumbai. Of breaking loose from a short stint at an NGO that was exactly opposite of what i knew and believed and then trying to fit in in another place. With unlearning my lessons and relearning. With changing my perspectives and getting a new perspective. Of trying to throw it all away and finding something even in throwing away.Of finding another karmbhoomi that i feel i can make a difference in and finding people who fight with me, argue with me, and still hold me when i falter taking my baby steps.

Of losing those friends and promising never to make friends again but falling into the trap of open smiles, dimples and soul-warming hugs..Of realising, it's never too sure with people and yet never too late to start trusting.

Of  losing a first life we created, even without realising we had created. Of not knowing how to react. Of hoping and losing hope.

The year of lonely nights, of tears shed. The year of confusion. The year of love. The year laughter of a new kind. The year of realising that you can win fights and arguments but still end up losing something much more important. The year of realising that it's sometimes better to be silent. The year of understanding that you are precious but not more than a lot more things. A year of realising that my life is based on little things, the small dreams. Of realising i do not want to win arguments anymore.

The year of realising that i've lived a life of the old woman long enough. It's probably time to live again.

Dwand

i'm at a strange phase of my life..

i've been here before..and so i'm scared for myself..and for everyone around me..it's my phase in life where i've let my mind rule my heart..where every moment i am thinking and questioning..about the why's and why nots..about alternatives..about roads and crossroads..

i know i'll be reckless now, because i'm not afraid anymore..at least not regarding certain things like losing because i know there are a certain things in life that i'll certainly lose..and if i've to find, i'll find again..

i question a lot of things in me..specially where i've let people take adavantage of me..because i've been quiet when people have taken from me what wasn't rightfully theirs and i've taken from them a behaviour which i did not deserve..today, i still do not want to challenge other people when they do that but i question myself today why i do it? What is it that i let them..i let them wield a power to hurt, to pain..do they own me? not really, but i have let hem..do they own the pain and hurt they give me? No- because they don't even realise that.

i've made them too powerful..and that's my nemesis.

i question what is right. My inherent affinity to keep quiet when it comes to people i love..hoping that if i love them enough and if they love back, they'd understand without explaining. But i now understand love means different things for different people. You either understand that love or you move on..

I feel hurt and confused. But the time says i've to move on.

There is a time when you have to realise that you are not the demon people say you are. It is not a sin to expect a hug, a smile, a patient ear, a look, a touch..It's not insane to ask  for a favour..And you have the right to receive too, a right to be cared for, to be loved..like you have..and for a change, perhaps, even when you haven't..Is it too much to ask?

( for all of us who're going through this with a loved one. You know it's for you. )

The Silent Noise

some days, the pain is all you are left with..

the pain of that friend lost..
the pain when she just disappeared from your life, forever..
the pain of not knowing what went wrong..
the pain of loving her still..
the pain of not even being able to talk to her in her time of grief..
the pain of coming across her picture on another friend's wall..

the pain of a relationship broken..
the pain of words said which will never come back..
the pain of one moment which changed your life..
the pain of tears you wish you had never shed..
the pain of being misunderstood by the man who you loved..
the pain of hating when you wanted to love..

the pain of your trust broken by someone in family..
the pain of ideals crashing in front of your eyes..
the pain of knowing somethings will never be the same again..
the pain of knowing your home was never yours..
the pain of knowing that this is the world which you didn't believe in..
the pain of knowing that your world never existed..

the pain of the sorries that couldn't be said..
the pain of the calls you never could make..
the pain of that letter still lying unposted..
the pain of that moment when you never turned..
the pain of that turn in your life you left far behind..

Thank You Life..

Blame it on the season..everyone around me was getting married..no..i still haven't..but soon..yes..very soon..
Needed to say a lot many thank yous..
Ajit Bhai: Thank You for sending me his number..thank you introducing me to my life..Seems so long ago..was it really April, 25th, this year when you gave me his number and i saved it as unknown..took me longer to send that first text across..May 8th..but my life's changed forever since..Thank You again..Ajit bhai, no words will ever show the gratitude both of us feel..
My Family: For understanding me enough and having that faith in me that i'm right in choosing him as my partner for life. And to have waited this long, going alongwith me in all my "no"s, knowing that i would get the best in life..because i'm your best..For knowing that my happiness is not in fancy weddings and fast cars..but in being loved and accepted..and also standing by me when i say i want a small simple wedding where i marry my life..
All Ex-Wayi-Zees: Specifically the Aars and Esses...For having the perception, or lack of it, to move on..to have knowingly or unknowingly have contributed to creation of persons both of us have become..where we understand the difference between the real and fake..when we understand the meaning of love, acceptance and complete surrender to each other....the reason we didn't even have to meet each other to know that we were meant for each other..for always..for life..the meeting was only the formality where all the pieces fell into place..but both of us were already each other's pieces..waiting to meet..am sure none of you expected us to move on..as i surmise from your current reactions, i guess you were fully expecting us to pine and rot away for you..sorry..but no sorries..we didn't..we were never the people who lost out on life..both of us love life..love ourselves..yes we loved you..with all we had and beyond..but it was you who chose to walk out and walk over..the only apology, sorry, we couldn't be the doormats you wanted us to be..

My friends: Ae to Zee.. Thank You for all the loving wishes , blessings and hugs and suggestions and smiles and jokes and tips..yeah, those ones too.. ;) they are a part of me for always..what would i do without you guys..who i sometimes feel are happier than me for me..yeah..don't go touching wood every two seconds..and no "kaala tika"..spare your monitors my loves..

My brothers and sis: Thank You for shaking me out of my irreverence sometimes..and craziness most of the time..and mostly , thank you for standing by me..
To the family i'm going into: Thank You for accepting me as a part of your family..Ma, for your acceptance and love and that assurance that i will find my roots i've always searched for, Madhu, for making me feel so at home and comfortable from the word go and that soft and sweet voice..Ajaa, for that comforting support and making me feel i'm marrying into a family of substance..feel so proud of you, Rishi: For being that devar i always wanted, are we going to have fights??!!! Kinshuk: still to meet you kid, but as your mom tells me about you, we're somewhere on the same levels..Dad..i'm still to meet..But i know, just know you all are made for me..the family of my dreams..Thank You..Will try to live up to the standards you all have unknowingly set..Thank You..

Yes, i'm getting married..when i do not know..where, no idea..in fact i'm as married to him as i can be..

Finally, Thank You my love..for coming into my life..i know both of us come from places where we were destined to meet and make this magic happen..Thank you for being the person you are..thank you for loving me so unconditionally..thank you for being my support, my strength, my pride, my confidence..Thank You for being my epitome, my dream, my value..Do not know when you became mi amor from unknown..do not know how you stole my heart away..but you have..and now you are my passion, my love, my ecstasy..thank you for understanding me..we'll romance life my love..together..i am complete with you..yes..even without you..i miss you..but it's only a waiting that we'll be together soon..to love, live..to read those books we've read and haven't..most importantly, the book of life...when i hold it and you read from it..your voice..my eyes..when the music is the symphony we make together..the fights, the laughter..the songs..the dreams..ours..
Thank You for being you..
i have wondered my love
how many ways i love you
and every day i fall in love again
i love you in the tightness of you embrace
in the softness of your fleeting touch
i love the way you look at me
love the way you look away
when i catch you doing it
love your voice over the phone
your laughter that gurgles from your throat into my heart
love the way you give me a new name everyday
mi amor, Esposa, mi rio, innamorata,
boie, childwoman, puchku
love, life
cheese, wife
yes, i am all those
you are the compliment and the complimentary

i have fallen into you
and do not know
where i end
and where you begin
i am you and you are me..
Dreams shared..because we have had the same dreams
at different times and different places
shared books..because we revel in the words
and our favourite book is our life
shared moments..because no moment is mine
since we met..it's our moments..
shared life..because the missed beats,,
the rushing blood..the pain..the ecstasy
the acceptance..the content
the trust..the belief..is ours..
our life..
Thank You..for being you..

The limits of dis-integration

No, you will not disintegrate
because there is no limit to you
because you are beyond
the known limits you know
because you are here
because you are now
because you are the past
because you are the future

You will not break
because you are a non entity
because your shape is not the body
because your thoughts are beyond boundaries
because you exist in everyone
and everyone exists in you

you will live even after you're gone
you have no choice
you will breathe till eternity
because your breath exists
from the beginning of the beginning
and will be lived by generations
till the end of the end.

You say you care for no one
can you stop everyone breathing
the air you just breathed out?
Can you wipe the slate clean
and undo your touch
in the many lives you've lived
in this one life?
can you stop the people loving you
can you stop the life around
how can you stop yours?

You say death is your goal
But what if there's another life beyond?
Will you live in torture
and set another goal for it to end?

I do not know how to reach out
because you will not let me
i do not know if i should
because my questions are still unanswered
i do not know if it is time
because my quest is not over yet

Your Boie...

Blank spaces give meaning to sentences, the voids make music, the stillness gives meaning to motion and that's what i've been trying to find..I have been very quiet but there's something i can't find..a stillness in thoughts, a stillness in action, a meaning of the void in my heart..the blank spaces that i do not understand..

No friends, noone to talk to..And when there's someone, there's nothing to talk about.. I'm a loner.. i always was..but am i becoming lonely too? Which i wasn't?

The only things i'm managing to find in the process is restlessness, confusion, a thousand unanswered questions..
Someone said i've become frozen-frigid. I think i have. i try to open up, to accept and then shut myself out, completely. In my fear of getting hurt i end up hurting people who are special.

It is as if i do not exist anymore. My life's lived for everyone and i love that life. When i am living that life i'm comfortable, i'm happy. It's where i can give, i can dictate my terms. When it comes to living a life for myself, i shun, i detract, i run away. Why? i do not face my fears, cause i'm scared to feel pain. i do not want to face those demons in the past because i feel it'll be an abyss.

i've
given , i give.. but only what i want to..i am scared to take because i always feel i do not deserve to take.

i let you dream last night
because i knew there would be no dreams again
i sang to you my unsung melodies
that was my tribute to you

you want me to be your boie, your book,
but the book's already closed.

i wish i could open the doors to my heart and let you in..
but there are no doors anymore.
i wish i could be owned,
i wish i could belong,
but my wishes are fanciful..
can the sky be owned?
can the air belong?

i love you, i do.
but i am a thief you know.
i steal, without giving back anything.
i wish i had something to give you
but all is that was mine to give is gone..
long before you came smiling by..

i want to take away that pain.
i want to be the friend to you i never had
but only if you let me be.
you know we had our moment
i could have turned it into a raging fire.
but i didn't.

i've
lost myself, i told you.
i can't reach myself anymore.

will you forgive me?
will you be my friend?

You say i'm the woman for you..
but how can i be,
when the woman is lost forever..
you sing i fill up your senses..
how can i with all my craziness?
You croon you can't take your mind off me..

Don't love me so much.
i can't love you back.
You do not deserve this coldness.

The warmth has to be answered with heat
the love with passion
the smiles with laughter
You deserve more than i give.
You deserve much more.

Hush New Year!!!!

Another day of my life..and the world ushered in another year with the euphoria and optimism associated only with human race.

Are the "Happy New Year"s really important? Was it happy, the year that was? Or the years that have so swiftly and stealthily passed me by. I do not remember any of those which did not start with atleast a few crackers going off and people screaming and shouting the "Happy New Year" into my ears. I also do not remember how many of those have been really happy. On an afterthought, most of them look rosy and the last one just the worst of the abberations. Or maybe i'm just being the cynic i have become.

I'll remember the last year for so many things. Not the least because the world was rocked by the worst scandals on the economic front, not the least because Obama became the face of hope internationally. Also not because i laughed secretly when "Bush and the Shoe" remained the headlines for days bringing to expose the hidden desire of every country.

Not the least because when we were loosing ourselves in the euphoria of shining markets and glittery sensex, the bubble burst and brought us back to reality of an India that still had 70 % of it living in villages, who still had not had a decent or even an indecent education. Also not because our country still is last century in its health care. Not even because politics has suddely become the economics, geography and chemistry of the globe. Not also because i felt totally squeamish that it took a terrorist attack at the five star locations to awaken patrotism and not the Bhopal tragedy or the blatant corruption, or the lack of education or livelihood options. But yeah, at this time of cheer and hope, let's conviniently forget that all.

Why not ponder over the chemistry within and outside. For example the left and the "who is right" . Or with the "Big Brother America". Oops. Wrong subject again. The Geography , perhaps? Of maps of Kashmir- The chinese, the Indian, the Pakistani or the Big B's. Oh!! Not that too?

Last year i thought the year would be great, i had started on the right foot. But in India you start your initiatives with the left foot. So that probably spoilt it.

No, I'm not very proud of the year that was. Not very hopeful of the year that's just come in through the door. I always write a motto for myself on the forst page of my diary: The last year's said, " Make a difference, be the change and Lead by example.." And that was much before Obama's change song became the world's anthem..i really don't know if i kept up to that motto..Yes, i made a lot of "differences"..i have somehow changed from the girl i was to a woman, i'm not..and god forbid anyone ever follows me..i've set all the wrong examples!!!

And this year, the first date of my diary stares at me from its blank page..

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!

The last Year: R.I.P.

Delhi Soliloquies

You know what? It's like falling in love. When you've been to a place a zillion times and you still find it new on every visit. When you're still awed by its sheer magnetism. When there's a secret hidden in it's gallis and aromas and you take it in , wanting to savour it forever. When you hate a thousand things about it and still accept it as a part of your being .Yes . It is like love. I think i fell in love with Delhi. Again.

What is it that you expect from the national capital? A little bit of India in it? A little bit of the old world charm? A frenzy of the futuristic skyscrapers and fast cars? A little bit of warmth? A little dose of charm? A little dash of irrationality? A cold shoulder? A dab of mysticism?

Yes, That's Delhi.

What do i want to tell you? That the first thing that hit me as i came out of the airport was the hot wind that was blowing off my dupatta and tugging at one end of my dupatta was a girl barely eight , hair sun bleached to different shades of blonde plaited in a faded ribbon , muddied face and the blistered palm outstretched , begging with that maddening soul-wrenching innocent pitiful look in her eyes. I looked up and found dozen or so such children , almost similar , scampering in the taxi stand outside the airport . And i felt something knot inside. This was our capital where policies for children get made. This was our capital where sits the parliament and screams in loud voices to eliminate child labour from the country and provide basic health and education to every child 5 to 14 years of age. And this wasn’t the only place i found them . If you go to Delhi this is as permanent as the Qutub Minar. When i talked of them , my friends in Delhi just shrugged. They have come to accept it just like they have accepted the Minar.

Muchun and Asad, my knights in shining armour and Honda City and Toyota Zen {just don't ask me about it!!!;) } in Delhi, decide to give us a detour and we go to Delhi through Gurgaon from the Airport.

Once you hit the road what hits you is the construction of "The Metro" and traffic jams at every other junction. But yes, it isn't as bad as Kolkata, nor is it chaotic like Mumbai and Pune.

And Gurgaon is an antithesis. The Gaon that it once was has been replaced by a string of malls that seems unending and endorsements and ads scream from hoardings as big as a gully cricket ground. What were the scattered villages and farms have been taken over by skyscrapers and neon lights, which could be a part of any big city in the world. I frankly lost count of the malls we crossed.

Do i really want to tell you about the call of the malls in Delhi? During my stay at Delhi i went to scores of malls and believe me i can't tell one from the other. From MGF Metropolitan, Central , SAHARA and bleh bleh at Gurgaon to the Great Indian Mall and some other bleh bleh in Noida to those PVR complexes in Priya, Saket and don't remember where. I do remember City Walk Select Mall at Saket though. Only because we went there a dozen of times as we were staying nearby and one evening we managed to get drenched in the jet sprinklers . I swear i was the oldest of all . Linu, my cousin who was my travelmate from the word go, was the one who initiated the plan. Afterwards, my jeans and tee stuck to me like second skin and we sat shivering. The summer clouds threatened above but boy , was it fun!! The nice part about this mall is that it has loads of space and open air. Also "The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf" serves a mean cup of coffee and Smoked Vegetable Sandwich. And yes, it has “Crosswords” . All this apart, i have had my share of malls for a lifetime and it would be a matter of life and death to make me want to get into one of those.

There are a few days i will remember forever from my trip. And Asad has loads to do with it. He showed me the Delhi i therwise would never have seen. I think if you've a friend for a guide who has grown up in the city and knows it as well as he knows himself, it's an advantage nothing can beat . And the way he always took care of me, i know no amount of thank-yous is going to measure up to all of it . We did fight like animals at times but that's more me than him. He's chivarlry personified. Guess what? The guy opened the door of the car for any women around too!! Linu will vouch for it !!

The visit to Qutub Shah's and Nizammuddin's Durgah was an experience which i won't easily forget. Mostly because i'm drawn to people and people are drawn by faith. The Kawwals with kohled eyes, the women praying through the marble screens tying colourful threads in "mannat" , the maulwi who says the "Dua" and screams obscenities at the little beggar children in the same breath. The smell of "Atr", incense sticks and roses. I can still feel the Goosebumps when i remember the rendering of Kawwallis in the background and the soulful recital by the beggars in the narrow gulli that takes you into the Durgah. Asad said it brings bad luck to visit one durgah and not visit the other or so they believe. I went to both so that should do me some good.

Or do i tell you about the old walled city which is a different world altogether. The fluttering of pigeons with the Azaan at Jama Masjid, The colours of sarees and intricate lehengas and mouth-watering mithaais at Chandni Chowk, The smells of Parantha in Parantha Gali and delicious Kababs at Karim's in Gali Kababiana. Do i tell you that this is the Dilli i love the most. It’s not the metro Delhi at all and you get lost in the beautiful colours, the narrow gallis, and the lovely smells of food being cooked and served on the streets, the music bellowing from speakers in every second shop. The burkha clad women, the demure little girls, the pan spitting men, the colourful rickshaws, just looking at them is a different feeling altogether. Ah..Rickshaws. The car parking is a mile away from Jama Masjid and you have to take rickshaws to reach the Masjid. Of course , you can walk too. But i simply had to sit on a rickshaw. I didn’t even remember what it felt like.

Believe it or not, it's a mela at the India Gate at night. I'm not sure if it's every night or only on that Sunday we went but the place was bustling with thousands and thousands of people , laughing, singing, playing, strolling, eating and of course littering the place. And it was later than 12 in the morning when we were there. It was crazy. And it was full moon too. Khirod Sir said it's like that every weekend and as we devoured one ice cream after another and strolling finally reached the India Gate, the picnic just seemed to have begun.

And India Gate: She is magnificent. She stands in testimony for the pride of being Indian and every time you look at her she sends your blood rushing through your veins like fire and a feeling akin to patriotism. As i write i can feel the goosebumps start all over.
The Rastrapati Bhawan and Lal Quila look beautiful by the night too. It's either the lighting or maybe i'm just a hopeless romantic.

Another monument that’s breathtaking after the sun has set is the Qutub Minar. Lit softly from below by the artificial lights and the zillion stars from above, the soft wind blowing through it’s corridors and singing some old forgotten tune, you can set lost in her for hours and not realize how time has flown.

And Delhi is a foodie Delh-ite.

Be it the street food or restaurants, the tastes are mind-boggling and the variety just amazing. The Pani puris with Pudine ki Chutney, The Dahi Bhalla, The Papri Chat, the famous Alu ki tikki fried in pure desi ghee, and the amazing assortment of paranthas and chutneys to accompany. Oh yes. the pickled chilies. You find these in every market and corner worth its name. I already wrote about Karim’s and everyone who’s a foodie swears by its seekh kababs. There’s this joint called “Kasbah” at GK and the tandoor is one of the best in the entire region. And once you are in GK don’t forget to check out the “Bread and More” . It’s cakes and pastries are a visual delight and let me not start with what it does to your taste buds. There’s this place called Qureshi’s just behind the South-Ex Market that serves food on the street. A must visit for any foodie. If you are a vegetarian, I would recommend “the Taste of India” chain but only if there were lesser flies and they did something with the ventilation. The Haldiram’s isn’t half bad either. If you have the craving for hot just cooked biriyani at the middle of the night, the place to go is ‘Comesum” near Nizammuddin Station. Believe it or not, it’s open throughout the night and the crowd starts pouring in when the clock strikes the midnight hour. "Eatopia" in the India habitat Centre is another place where you get an assortment of food. Just make sure you avoid the weekend rush or else you won’t find a place to sit. And IHC is a treat for a person like me. Wonderful exhibitions of paintings and photographs, plays, experimental art by amateurs and professionals. I could go there every day and still not get bored by it. If you love south Indian food “Sagar Ratna” is the place to go. There’s this place called “Evergreen” in Green Park that’s supposed to serve lovely food but i wouldn’t know as we got kicked out for reaching late for lunch. And it was only three in the afternoon. We ended up eating those stupid French fries and sandwiches and burgers at McD’s and i was in a bad mood throughout the day. Asad swears by the Chinese in Taj and Mishti hates it and i have no taste for anything Chinese, so i am no judge on that either. But Muchun, my permanently hungry chaperone did carry those “Yo China” boxes every time he had one of his hunger pangs. And that guy. Has he got an appetite! I wouldn’t bet on it if i weren’t sure he could digest anything eatable within seconds and manage to feel hungry again. Oh! Before i forget. All Italian food lovers, “Big Chill” in Khan Market is the place to be. I loved it more because it had the big posters of all those long forgotten classics, from Casablanca to My Fair Lady and Humphrey Bogart looking down at you from every other poster. And that they give you a choice of pasta, sauce and bread to choose from and the heavenly smells that come from the kitchen is just beside the point. Hyatt was a fiasco as are most big restaurants. They are more about ambience, service and subdued voices than the food itself. So, i’d give it a miss. And before this turns into a food guide, I’ll stop. I can already feel my stomach rumbling. God knows how i managed to lose weight after eating so much!! On one of our eating trips, when i finally said no to ice-cream at the end of a big brunch, my host said, “ My dear, remember. All good things in life are either illegal, immoral or fattening”. Ouch!

I will remember the times i spent with the little kid, my nephew, all of six months old and he was a treat. Do i miss him!! And my bhaiya and bhabhi just celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary and still behave like love-struck teenagers. They made me wish for a married life. Asad's family gave me such a warm feeling of being back at home. Another couple that gave me that mushy feeling was Ajit Bhai and Namita Di. And their son, Aryan's a treat. The kid, all of four years is a car buff and loves bungee jumping and oregami. What age do we live in!!!

And i will remember the movie i watched which was meant to be a punishment for me - Khuda Ke Liye. It was meant to be a payback because i made our gang go through the ordeal of watching a crap called “U Me Aur Hum”. But what a payback it turned out to be. Definitely ranks as one of the best movies in recent times, beautifully portraying religion, rise in extremism, 9/11, love, sacrifice, repentance, and confusion in youth, intrinsically woven together with strings of music. The music is so beautiful i bought the music and gifted it to everyone around who had an ear for it. I loved the movie even more because Asad was there and he had given me a great background on modern Muslim families and the confusion and contradiction within. He also called the Muslim men a certain profanity of the sister kind which can’t be quoted here and it was hilarious at points when he gave comparisons of the movie with himself. Incidentally the profanities of the mother and sister kind are not profanities at all for Delhites. They are more a part of speech, mostly used as a pronoun and adjective, but sometimes can take forms of noun and adverb too. The Eff word is an accessory like those D&G glasses or CD perfume, to be used as frequently as possible. They asked me to get used to it, but i’m not sure if i ever will.

And in the meanwhile here’s a list of books i managed to read up on. Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri, 366 teachings of Islam, The Quran, The Naxalism Movement in India, Talent IQ, Globalisation and its effect on India, The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khalled Housseini, The Zigzag Way by Anita Desai, Buddha and his Teachings, Conversations with God- Part 1 to 3, The Speaking Tree, Volume 1, A Good Earth by Eckhart Tolle. And i finally got my own copy of "The Undercover Economist".

There are some things that didn’t go as i had thought. Like the trip to Hrisikesh, Haridwar, Kasauli and Vaishno Devi . And that can wait till my next trip. And a BIG tip. Do not ever go to Delhi on a pleasure trip in summer unless of course you have a thing for an open air-scalding sauna, which is what Delhi turns into March through July. Do not get your clothes stitched by a “Masterjee” in any high-end boutique unless he's your regular one . The chances are there will be a hole in your pocket and safety pins keeping your dress in place. Do carry a garbage bag with you always. It's almost impossible to find one anywhere in Delhi. Do not take your car out, if it has rained even for 15 minutes. You are bound to get stuck in a traffic and chaos. Do not walk aroung with a locked knee and sprained ankle, and definitely not in four inch heels, you'll just end up falling at all the wrong places. Do not go to a mall with any kind of plastic card that has dough in it. You’ll end up buying things you never needed in the first place, you’ll end up paying a hefty fine to the airlines and when you finally take out those pair of Levi’s I’m sure you wouldn’t want to know how much you ended up paying for it. And to think it looks so tattered and torn your mom’s in two minds if she should use it as a swab.

There was one thing i missed in the entire trip. My Camera. Next time.

I am back at Keonjhar after more than a month and strangely when i think of Delhi now the first thing i remember is the last look i had of the city from my flight. all lighted up like diwali celebration, the blinking lights and zillions of stars crawling an a snail’s pace in straight lines..

They say “Dilli dilwalon ki hai” ..i don’t know that. But i sure miss it. Thank you M, A , B &B , KS, M , Ab, ND, Aryan and Puchul and everyone who made it so beautiful for me.

And to all my friends , sorry for not replying and updating you sooner. But now you know.

The Seventh Season!!!

You dial the digits which you say is the sequence of numbers you remember better than your ATM password and give a call to me after five years. Why, i have no idea and neither do you.

You say i still love you. You say it's more than ever. And i confess, i do not know. The love that was is a moment frozen in time. I admit i outdid myself in loving you and swore it would be eternity before it died.

I do not know if it died. Or just went to sleep. I say i have changed. You say i'm still the same. I do not know which is worse.

I had moved from one time to the other, from one relationship to another before we met, in search for that "love" which i thought would never find. I haven't found it since either. You say i don't want to find it. You should know. Weren't we called a phenomenon? Wasn't there a time when words were such stupid unnecessities in communication? Wasn't a look enough to know what the other as thinking?Wasn't there a time when it was always "we" and never an "i"? You say i should move on. I say i have and you don't believe me. I am bored really. Nothing, no one to be precise, manages to hold my attention for more than a few days. Sometimes there's a sudden promise of depth and i try my best to make it work but it always turns out shallow. Is it their failing or is it mine? Now that i look at it, i realise i never try to keep my side of the bargain. I just don't connect. You know i'm not unhappy. Far from it. I'm happy and satisfied. I love my work and i don't feel the need to get into a relationship now. You say i still love you...

But what difference does it make? i could have called you too and i would be lying if i said i didn't want to. I did. Oh so much that it ached till i could bear it no longer. Just to hear the sound of your voice, to see the look in your eyes. But i knew it wasn't the thing that could change anything.

You know i hated you once. But it was never enough to wipe the love i felt. I still haven't understood if it was my love i felt or yours i knew. If someone mentioned your name it was a fresh wound in my heart. Oh god, it still is. To see the same eyes, and the same look.To see the reflection of the love i felt and the pain still hidden behind that smile.I could hate you but i don't have the urge anymore. I have tried and failed. We are not together not because i loved you less or you ceased to love me . As if that can ever happen. But because that was a decision you took for your family and that's just another reason i loved you for. I know you'll never read this and if you do it will just be a testimony to what you already know. But when was there a need for one? The similar people that we are nothing needs to be proven to each other.

We pass each other on the street after such a long time and you still look at me as if the five years never happened. You smile and all wrongs are forgiven. And that is my space with you. I know and you do too that the vacuum will never cease and the blank spaces will always remain. And we both know it will never be right again. Not in the sense the world wants it to be.

She woke up with a start. She knew it was a dream. She knew he would never call. She knew he was like her.

She knew it was just one of those days.

Happy Birthday!!!
